Léopold Faure was a wealthy man from Grignan who in 1838 bought back the destroyed, looted, abandoned castle from the du Muy family.
He undertook the rescue of the building: the terraces were reinforced, and roofs were constructed to protect what remained. He embarked on a search for the furnishings that had once belonged to the place, buying back furniture, paintings, and objects, without being wealthy enough to undertake proper restoration.
He died in 1883. In 1902, the castle was sold to the famous dandy Boniface de Castellane who did not hesitate to strip it of its finest features.
